You guys, seriously.
I don't know what it is...but there is something very disturbing under my house...or, maybe in my walls.
A groan of sorts. A dulled groan coming from somewhere. I first noticed it months ago on one of the nights Brian was on-call at the hospital all night (making for a terribly long night for my paranoid mind), and since then have noticed it intermittently. One day, after I'd heard the noise 4 or 5 times, I mentioned to Brain that I thought a monster lived under the house, and his 'your-crazy' expression led me to realize a rather confusing trend: I only heard it on the nights he was on-call.
"Am I going crazy?" I wondered.
But I was relieved from that thought when, a week later, Brian and I were getting ready for bed and the groan in the walls started again. I stopped mid-sentence, felt my eyes go wide, and held up one finger bent slightly towards the noise. "See!" I said once it was done, "That's the monster!"
Brian has been working late-shifts for the past couple of weeks and generally doesn't get home until midnight or one in the morning - so I wait up for him. This week, I've noticed something else peculiar about the noise: it always happens at 12:04 am. This, then, explains why I only hear it on the nights Brian is gone...because we rarely stay up past midnight when he's home.
But, I'm still left to wonder...what in the devil is making that scary noise in the middle of the night?
Did Brian hear the monster when you pointed it out to him? It does seem that when I'm home alone I notice the creeks of the house more, but creeks may be very different than monster noises...but I don't recommend watching any scary movies or reading scary books during these times...
ReplyDelete12:04? Really? Are we talking exactly 12:04 every night, or is this an estimated time? I hear it's unusual to have such punctual monsters.
ReplyDeleteBecky - Yep...Brian heard the noise as well. So I was relieved to know that I wasn't crazy! And, it's definitely more than just a creek of the house (but, believe me, I've been scared of those, too!)
ReplyDeleteMichelle - yes, 12:04 exactly. (I generally don't tend to estimate times with an :04!) I can't say whether or not it's EVERY night - that hypothesis has yet to be tested. If you'll notice, I started this post at 12:05 - exactly 1 minute after I heard the noise...and it was the 3rd time I'd noticed it happening at 12:04. I'll see if it happens again tonight, though.
Is your thermostat programmed to cool down at night? At 12:04?:) That is really mysterious!
ReplyDeleteThat's why I don't do so well by myself at nights. Either there really is something in the window or my mind is just playing tricks on me. I hate it!
ReplyDeleteI would wonder if it isn't a pipe or like Katie said, the thermostat. I'm sure it is no monster or animal... they aren't exactly precise. Do you notice it after using the restroom or showering at night or something? Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Wierd! I love Michelle's comment about punctual monsters. I would think it's an animal or something like that, but I'm not a house expert. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking pipe too, but either way I have to agree that the punctuality is very odd. Keep us posted! :)
ReplyDeleteLol, I vote for gremlins :) But seriously, we had a similar 'monster'. Turns out if was our hot water heater going through a 'cooldown' cycle in the middle of the night :)
ReplyDeleteUmmm.... I totally hear you on the monster part. Those creepy noises keep me up at night, but Ladd seems to sleep through them!
