Leaving you in the dark...

Sorry all - I do realize I have abandoned you all to wonder about my sick little guy for far too long (it's okay to admit that you've thought of little else for over a week now...) He's doing great! Totally back to normal and he seems to have forgiven all involved - even after being jabbed EIGHT times before they were finally able to draw blood, and stabbed FIVE times in his back before they were finally able to get spinal fluid...in the charts it went down as a 'traumatic tap'. I should say it was traumatic! For him, of course...but also for his mother! The meningitis ended up being only a virus, and he got through it in a couple of days.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the concerned comments, e-mails, phone calls, prayers, visits, the perfectly melted milkshake, and the fantastic homemade bread - I have the best friends and family in the world. Thanks for your support.

Now, a question for mothers of three or more children: HOW IN THE DEVIL DO YOU FIND TIME TO BLOG?!?!? We are absolutely exhausted - this sweet little baby is killing us softly as we're going on over a week of 3-4 hours of sleep a night. See, it's the combination of him with the other kids that makes it so difficult. Miles likes to have some 'awake time' up until about 12 or 1 in the morning, then wakes up twice for food in the night, and then the other kids wake up at around 6:30 or 7:00. Problem: I have to be awake for ALL of it! No chance for naps during the day, either - when my other kids are down, Miles is awake. When Miles is awake, the other kids need to be attended to. Please, tell me this gets better! I am actually sitting here, bouncing Miles on the yoga ball and typing with one hand. My eyes are stinging from lack of sleep, and I have beautiful, dark circles under my eyes. So many things to blog about - and I can't find the time to do it!

Ah, well. At least we seem to have a lot of love in this house (usually). I often find myself smiling for no real reason, and I'm sure things will calm down relatively soon. For now, I'll just keep treading water. :)

  1. I think the moment you're in is the hardest. I think that 3 weeks after a baby is born is when the sleep deprivation sets in for real and your help is all gone. So when your parents come, let them help you get caught up on your sleep.

I really really really was going to try to bring you a dinner this week but my life is out of control trying to get ready to go. It may have to wait until September!

  2. I know that after I had my second I felt the same way for the first couple of weeks until I was able to get my baby on a schedule closer to my firsts. It made it possible for me to take a short nap in the day and that made things so much better. I don't know if that is something that is possible for you or not. Or maybe you could sleep when McKenzie and Carson first go to bed at night and get your husband watch the baby until he needs to eat before he goes to bed. All I can really say is good luck and it can only get better from here. :)

  3. Glad the baby is okay. Here's the trick to blogging with lots of kids. Turn on the TV for the big kids, get the yoga ball, bounce the baby, and type with one hand. Good luck! :)

  4. I'm so glad Miles is okay. We were so worried! I hear you about the three kid thing. I'm still not convinced this is entirely possible. I've tried instituting "quiet time" for the older kids while my Miles sleeps. Mostly I've just turned into a raving loon. Good luck with that. If you get some sage wisdom, be sure to share!

  5. Hummm, makes me soo excited for November. Thanks for the reality check that babies aren't all fun and games. Maybe I'll just kick back and enjoy the pregnancy part and what sleep I do get a little more. Ahhh, sleep!

  6. Oh Lindsay I didn't mean to make you feel bad for not posting anything yesterday! As far as blogging I do it after the kids go to sleep. Though I don't have a little one anymore either. Three really wasn't to bad for me it was when I had 4. Even though Ethan was the best baby in the world, having 4 was just so hard for me. It still is. I can truly say that I have know idea how people have more the 4 kids. I am very glad that Miles is feeling better! I hope you get some more sleep soon. Though my father-in-law says that as soon as we have kids we never get good nights of sleep anymore. Either we are up with new babies or waitting for those crazy teenagers to come home.

  7. OK, think of a list of things for us to do when we get there! Whether it is just taking the kids so you can sleep, or painting doors....we are at your mercy!

Soooo excited to see you and Brian and OBVIOUSLY, the kids!

  8. Wow, It sounds like you have had a rough time. Poor little guy! I'm glad he's ok. In my opinion, the first year of your baby's life (especially baby # 3 or 4 or more)is pretty much survival mode for mom. I would say don't stress too about getting anything done beyond the bare basics. If you get more done, it's a happy surprise. If not, no big deal.

  9. Call ME, obviously!:) My solution (which I have yet to follow): lower your standards in every area- feed your kids whatever, don't clean, just survive and enjoy. If you figure out how to do that, will you let me know?:)

  10. I second Katie's advice! I am around all week, and I'd love to take Carson and McKenzie for a few hours before your parents get here! I will give you a call tomorrow...
Also, Miles is so darling! So fun to meet him at book club!

  11. Hey Lindsay ;)
I know McKenzie is in school now, but we'd love to have her and Carson over to play any time, or take them on one of our adventures so you can get some much needed zzzzz. With each child, I've learned more and more the value of sleep, and found every opportunity to get more! Don't go too far too fast, stay behind sometimes, and just sleep while your little guy is sleeping. Give yourself some time to get back into your groove, and then a new routine will start to fall into place. You look great ;)

It is a little difficult to take care three children and other projects that need to be done. I think about all the projects I am in the middle of and get overwhelmed with it all. It does get better though. It seems it won't but before you know it, Miles will start sleeping through the night and finally getting him on a different schedule. I had little sleep when Parker was born. I was getting probably 4 hours a night and he wanted to be held most of the night.

  13. i'm glad to hear your little one is doing better. about the blogging...well michelle doesn't do it, i do. that's the big secret we have. with 4 kids and 1 one the way she doesn't have time to blog, barely has time to read them. but it does get better once your routine is established and the sleeping settles into a regular pattern. hang in there.
