No Longer Deprived!

You may remember my sorrow (in this post) last October when the last of our freezer jam was eaten.

Six months ago.

Six looooooong months of waiting. My palate has been disappointed for so long because of my own negligence in letting this season go by last year without taking advantage of it - but now, NOW I will not disrespect the sacredness of this wonderful time of year.

Yes, Berry Picking Season has come again!

My freezer is once again being stocked with jars and jars of strawberry freezer jam - and I vow to never again let my family endure this famine!

Happy, happy day!

  1. Yummmm, now I want some. We had it when I was a child and it was always the best jam. Do you make it by yourself and if so I would be very interested in your recipe and process?

  2. Oh, and I meant to mention that I noticed that you updated your pregnancy picture. You look so cute. Thanks:)

  3. What fantastic pictures! Was this at some farm by you? And I have to say, just like you, I am a total 'jam snob' - I thought that was such a funny phrase you used back when you ran out. I'm watching my store of pluot jam dwindling and I hope we make until the fall. Not that there aren't other jams to make. Have you ever tried canning with a canner (then you can really stock up)?

  4. I'm assuming the berry farm in NC? I had no idea they had those there! You do look amazing at 7 months along. You are getting close!

  5. Is depravity really the right word? I can't quite figure out if you're talking about doing without jam, or behaving in a terrible fashion because of the stress of doing without jam!

So are the berries really on yet, or just beginning to be on? I usually buy about 80lbs, but this year my best picker is in Idaho and my 2nd best picker is still recovering from surgery!

  6. Christina - it's SO simple - buy a box of pectin (Sure-Gel is my favorite brand - ask your grocer what it is and they'll help you find it), and follow the recipe inside the box. Seriously three ingredients: strawberries, sugar and pectin.

Heather - I haven't tried canning with a canner - it's kind of intimidating to me...but I see it in my future! :)

Cindy - How Funny!!! NOOOO depravity is definitely NOT the right word! I have this habit of making up words to fit them into the conjugation that I'm looking for - - - and this time, it turned out to be quite inappropriate. :) What a surprise when I google-defined the word! Thanks for the heads-up.

And, the season is definitely just beginning to be on. We came home with 18 pounds, and it wasn't hard to get there...but they said if you wait until the second week of May it would be much better.

  7. I can't wait to pick some strawberries this weekend. I won't be making freezer jam as the freezer will be turned off this summer. But I will be eating the strawberries! I'm glad your family is so well taken care of.

  8. I think we should all get a copy of the "Lindsay Dictionary" and life would be happier. I think I liked your defintion of "depravity" better.

I'm soooo jealous that you live so close to strawberry fields. They are so much better off the bush than at the store. I had to re-stock my freezer at Valentine's day when they were on sale then. Cost-co has had some yummy strawberries lately and there were a few the size of my fist. INSANE! I love the pictures of the kids and I'm impressed that you would take on the whole process being preggo and all. Good luck on finding freezer space and containers!

  10. Darling and delicious! The kids and the strawberry jam--in that order, preferably. I'm glad that others share my homemade jam eliteness :)

  11. I guess that's one disadvantage to the late summers here - our strawberries are just barely starting to grow! Oh well, luckily I have lots of jam leftover still :)

  13. LOVE it! We went this week too. In fact I was just getting them ready to post on our blog! We had a great time too! It's good to have NC in common!
